How To Create A Perfect Morning Routine

I have been scouring Pinterest, trying to find the “Perfect Morning Routine”. There are a lot of results but none that fit my lifestyle. I mean, some of these mommas have to be getting up at 4:30 am! Every. Day. Where is the “Perfect Morning Routine” for the stay at home mom who likes to sleep in? Does that one even exist?

I am not going to fail before I even get started. I know my limitations. I am NOT a morning person. This morning I woke up at 6:00 am, which is EARLY for me!! I tend to roll out of bed around 7:00 am, just in time to make sure my oldest gets out the front door on time.

So, is there a “Perfect Morning Routine” out there for me? The answer is YES!!! I found it and I bet it will work for you too no matter what kind of morning (or non-morning) person you are!!

How To Create A Perfect Morning Routine

One thing I learned in my search for this magic “Perfect Morning Routine” was that there is not a one size fits all list out there. You are going to have to sit down and come up with a routine with a list of daily habits that work for YOU! Your routine is going to be designed around your priorities, personality, and timeline. A morning routine for a work out of the house mom will likely look different for a work at home mom or a stay at home mom.

Keep it Super Simple

Ever heard of the K.I.S.S. method? Keep it simple stupid! Now, I don’t think this is meaning to say you are stupid, but I can see how it would come off that way. So, I decided to change the S’s around. Keep it super simple!

I think, as moms, we try to cram as much stuff into an hour as we possibly can. I have found the key success to my morning routine is to keep it simple! Do not over schedule your morning, the only thing that will do is lead to more stress.

Be Realistic

When creating your morning routine, think about YOU and your reality. Don’t worry about what Sally, the wonder mom, next door is doing. She does her and you do you! For example, I know for a fact that I will NOT work out first thing in the morning. There is no sense in me adding a workout routine to my morning because I know I will skip over it. Every. Single. Time.

Start Small

If you are not a morning person and you typically get out of bed at 7:00 am then saying you want to start getting up at 5:00 am is a HUGE stretch. I am not saying that you can’t make that a goal, but you might want to start getting up 15-30 minutes earlier first. Then you can work your way up to the 2 hours. Don’t let your plan fail before you even get it off the ground. Start small and work your way up.

Creating Your Daily Morning Habits

What you include in your perfect morning routine is up to you. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

I LOVE the book Miracle Morning and was introduced to this concept almost 2 years ago. The author, Hal Elrod, talks about 6 key things you should add to your morning routine. He mentions you should get up an hour earlier and spend 10 minutes on each of these areas.

Daily Morning Habit: Silence

Oh, silence. You are my friend.

Silence could be in the form of meditation, prayer, reflection, deep breathing, and/or gratitude.

In the book, Breathe Mama Breathe: 5-Minute Mindfulness For Busy Moms, Shonda Moralis, goes over A LOT of great tips for moms. In Chapter 2, “Starting Your Day” the first section is “Waking with Gratitude”.

She says,

“As soon as you are conscious enough to realize you are awake(ish), pause and take a deep breath. (At first, this may not be until you have stumbled out of bed to attend to a child or poured your first cup of coffee. That’s fine; pause wherever you are. After practicing for a bit, you will catch yourself sooner, before you make your way out of bed.) Bring to mind those things for which you are grateful. Perhaps it is your health, your children, your partner, friends, coffee, birds singing, sun shining, rain falling. Keep it simple and keep it positive. Through your day take notes of how this mindfulness shifts your perception of those things normally taken for granted into a greater sense of appreciation.”

I am the one who stumbles out of bed and walks straight to the coffee pot! I LOVE what Shonda shares with us! Start your morning in silence and with gratitude!

Daily Morning Habit: Affirmations

Reading Hal’s book was one of the first places I learned about affirmations. I have been obsessed ever since. You might be a little skeptical but speaking affirmations OUT LOUD over yourself is a game changer! The words we hear are the words that play over and over in our heads, you have a daily dialogue playing in your head all day long. What is it saying?

Are the words playing over and over in your head about past experiences, good or bad? Are they the words you have told yourself over and over, good or bad? Affirmations will help you CHOOSE positive and uplifting thoughts to replace any negative your subconscious is telling you.

I don’t think it is a condescendence that, in every self-development book I have read, affirmations make an appearance. Every. Time.

Daily Morning Habit: Visualization

Just like affirmations, visualization is BIG! I started reading the book, Eat That Frog: 21 Great Ways To Stop Procrastinating and right there in the introduction they talked about visualization.

The author, Brian Tracy, says,

“ Your mental picture of yourself has a powerful effect on your behavior. Visualize yourself as the person you intend to be in your future. Your self-image, the way you see yourself on the inside, largely determines your performance on the outside. All improvements in your outer life begin with improvements on the inside, in your mental pictures.”

Start visualizing who you want to be as a person, mom, wife, employee, entrepreneur, etc. Start visualizing the outcomes you want to happen! My husband and I are on a journey to be debt free, one of the things I visualize is paying that last debt payment!

Daily Morning Habit: Exercise

Like I said above, you know I am not going to exercise in the morning. However, others find the morning time to be the best time to exercise. They get that workout in their day before the day gets away from them. Your morning exercise might look super intense with a lot of sweat or maybe it is a simple yoga routine.

Daily Morning Habit: Reading

This right here is one of my favorite parts!! I love books especially books that focus on self-development and spiritual growth. Maybe you prefer fiction books? Either way, just read!

I have personally read all these books and recommend them anytime I can. Every one of them has guided me in different areas of my life!

Daily Morning Habit: Scribing (Writing)

Hal, says that

“The scribing element of your Miracle Morning enables you to document your insights, ideas, breakthroughs, realizations, successes, and lessons learned, as well as any areas of opportunity, personal growth, or improvement.”

You can do this by journaling every morning. This is one of the things I would really like to start doing. I do have a prayer journal I write in daily (or at least almost daily). You can read more about how I use my prayer journal HERE.

Amazon has some guided journals, but I haven’t personally used any yet. These are a few I have been eyeballing.

Other Daily Morning Habits

What else should be included in your perfect morning routine? Here are some ideas!

Productive Daily Morning Habits

  • Make bed.

  • Make school/work lunches.

  • Go over the to-do list/daily schedule, make sure you know what the day ahead holds.

  • Take out any frozen meats that are needed for dinner.

  • Throw in a load of laundry.

  • Clean up kitchen breakfast mess, load dishwasher and start it if needed.

Healthy Daily Morning Habits

Self-Care Daily Morning Habits

  • Coffee/tea/smoothie (enjoy your morning drink of choice).

  • Put on makeup and/or jewelry.

  • Say your affirmations.

  • Play music, inspirational podcasts, motivational speeches, or audiobooks while you get ready for the day.

Spiritual (Faith) Daily Morning Habits

  • Prayer.

  • Bible journaling.

  • Daily Bible reading.

  • Meditation.

4 Things NOT To Do In Your Morning Routine

These may be a little obvious, but I am going to say them anyway.

  • Get on social media (this becomes a time waster).

  • Watch TV, unless you like to watch the news channel in the morning (again, this can become a time waster).

  • Pack your bag (purse, diaper bag, school bag, etc), do this the night BEFORE so you are ready to go! The only thing you should have to throw in the school bags in the morning is the packed lunches. Such a TIME SAVER!

  • All the things you should have done the night before! Be proactive in the evening so your mornings are not so stressful. For some this could mean setting out your clothes for the next day, cleaning and tidying up the house so there is a calmer and more organized environment in the morning, or creating a to-do list for the next day so you are prepared for what lays ahead.
